Season 44: Work

We seem to be a society obsessed with performance and personal status, but at the same time a society without a clear direction and shared values. The mass resignation of the public sphere and the emphasis on personal achievement have crowned the work for which we receive money to the position of the most essential criterion determining our worth and guiding our view of the world and of others.

The world has economized and poured into spreadsheets. From the work that drives this economy, the mission plane is increasingly lost, leaving only a pragmatic view of income height and social status. Concepts such as care, public service and renewability are, despite the pervasive ecological collapse of our planet, overtaken by concepts such as efficiency, profit or growth. The work that creates value is displaced by the work that creates only money. The social scissors between radically overvalued and radically undervalued work are opening up more and more. Increasingly, the idea is being imposed that human dignity is given only by the ability to meet all the demands of work — however absurd they may be. The increasing incidence of depression ceases to be a personal problem and becomes a political problem. As if the value of work has gone mad and we with it. That's why with Season 44, we ask: Can current society really value the price of our work? Does the work of most people really help society and nature, or is it just a ticket to a zone of unlimited consumption? Don't we use our performance to cover up our inner chaos? Do we understand the consequences of our work? Is art work? How valuable and for whom? What about study—prepares us to face the tasks of future necessary work, or is it rather an initiation into a world of meaningless work? Don't we then miss out on real work because of artificial labor? Like working in a public space? Working on interpersonal relationships? Work on yourself? And who will rate her? But isn't the time of a new era coming — the era of machine work? What will be our job in such a world? Who will the future work serve?
