First Ladies

The Czech population is aging. In times of record employment, an ever-growing number of people face the threat of future unemployment (machines). How should we make use of these years of rest? Does society even care for its tired and worn-out members? How do actors age? Can vitality still be performed?

Pensioners Greta and Erna, along with their servant Marjánka, find themselves at the end of their meticulously lived lives. Withered bodies sit around a table, and the only truly unrestricted activity left to them is talking. Dialogue turns into monologue, and compassion has been collectively flushed down the toilet. How to pass the time? Where to move? Is there even a need to go anywhere? A portrait of a sidelined layer of society, an interior of a dysfunctional domestic democracy. Everyone has the right to their own foul-smelling story!

A return of the triumphant debut comedy by provocateur Werner Schwab (1958–1994) to the Czech stage. The “colossal liar” from Graz is back in action.

Winner of the Divadelní noviny Award for Best Drama Production of 2020. Marie Ludvíková received a nomination for Best Actress (Divadelní noviny Awards 2020), and Kamila Valůšková received a broader nomination for the Thalia Awards 2019.
